Regions4Climate

Our currently most important and largest project for our shared archipelago.

Our work against climate change

A new project is now underway involving 12 regions in Europe, working to increase resilience to climate change. Regions4Climate engages regions in developing and testing their resilience plans and transformative adaptation pathways.

The solutions developed within the Regions4Climate project will create new opportunities for European regions.

– Climate-smart and efficient maritime transport is crucial for archipelago areas and maritime transport as a whole. The archipelago regions in the Baltic Sea are almost entirely dependent on maritime transport. The project allows us to map and design new solutions for shipping in the archipelagos, says Annastina Sarlin from the Nordic Archipelago Cooperation. Read more about archipelago transport here!

Many partner regions around the world

Regions4Climate will implement innovative measures to increase resilience to climate change in close collaboration with stakeholders in the real environments of the partner regions.

The partner regions are Basque Country (Spain), Southern Aquitaine (France), the Azores (Portugal), Tuscany (Italy), Køge Bay (Denmark), Burgas (Bulgaria), Helsinki-Uusimaa (Finland), Pärnumaa (Estonia), Eastern Crete (Greece), Castilla y León (Spain), the Nordic Archipelago (Finland, Åland, and Sweden), and Troodos (Cyprus).

At least 13.8 million people, residents of the twelve Regions4Climate partner regions, are expected to directly benefit from the project’s results, with potential for scaling up globally.

– An added value will be achieved by exploring the possibilities for a collaborative model between nations, a joint enterprise for future maritime transport in these sensitive archipelago areas, says Annastina Sarlin.

Will create resource-efficient solutions

Will create resource-efficient solutions

By providing a set of proven, scalable, and easily replicable solutions for climate change adaptation, the project will facilitate and strengthen decision-making processes and increase regional resilience to climate change.

– Climate change requires a paradigm shift in how we interact with our environment. As we strive to both adapt to and mitigate climate change, we must become increasingly resource- and water-efficient, work in harmony with nature, and generate new knowledge and information that enables society to cope with this major global challenge,” explains Laura Wendling, researcher at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and coordinator for Regions4Climate.
